One writes to convey a message or an idea, with the intention to inform, educate, convince or instruct the reader. Thus, the writer’s intention is to produce an effect in the reader, and/or prompt them to take action. Therefore, it is only natural that the writer places the reader at the centre of their writing, to ensure that their product is as clear and accessible as possible. The most effective way to achieve this goal is by using clear language. This requires great skill and draws on several tools that range from grammar, structure, format and design. At Clear Guidelines, we believe it is the writer's job is to ensure the reader readily and precisely perceives the meaning of what the writer intends to convey.

The gains tend to be beneficial all round. Clear language helps improve the reader’s perception of the message sender, be they a public or private organisation. Clear language can appease the reader, make them more willing to “hear” the message, and encourage them to co-operate more. Readers are more at ease with clear language in administrative, legal or contractual documents, and find it much more intelligible than bureaucratese, legalese and journalese. Because communication in clear language flows and is more digestible, your readers are more likely to appreciate the import of your message, and/or comply with your request. Clear language can save your office/business money.

Writing in clear language is a culture and investment. At Clear Guidelines, we apply the clear language approach, when translating policy documents, writing minutes of high level international meetings, or revising contracts for international organisations and associations, public administrations, utilities, private companies and more. We endeavour to be as attentive as possible to the reader’s needs, by using clear, easy-to-understand language in our work. We also teach the guidelines of our approach online.
